Heat Wave Self-Care Tips

When a heat wave hits, it can quickly wear down your energy and affect your mood. Knowing how to practice effective heat wave self-care is essential to stay safe, cool, and balanced during those scorching days. Whether you live in Framingham or anywhere else, these simple tips will help you support your body and mind through the heat.

Hydrate More Than You Think You Need

By the time you’re thirsty, you’re already behind. Keep a water bottle with you and sip regularly throughout the day. If plain water feels boring, try adding cucumber, citrus, or mint to make it more inviting.  Learn more about hydration here.

Give Yourself Permission to Slow Down

Heat saps energy. Your usual pace might not feel doable — and that’s okay. It’s a good time to cancel what can wait, move more slowly, and focus on the bare essentials.

Have a Place to Cool Down

If your home isn’t air-conditioned, plan ahead to find cooler spots in your area — like libraries, malls, or cooling centers. In Framingham, you can find official cooling centers HERE, or do a search to find centers near you.  Staying cool isn’t just about comfort, it’s about health!

Eat Light, Eat Fresh

Go for foods that hydrate and don’t weigh you down: watermelon, berries, cucumbers, yogurt, salads. Lighter meals are easier to digest and help keep your internal temperature steady.

Be Gentle With Yourself

Hot weather affects your nervous system, your sleep, your emotions — all of it. If you’re more irritable, tired, or scattered than usual, give yourself some grace. This is a time for extra kindness, not pressure.

🌿 Wellness Tips for Cooling Down:

  • Lukewarm Showers
Not ice cold — lukewarm water helps lower your core temperature gently without shocking your system (which can actually make your body hold on to heat).

  • Chill Your Pulse Points
Wrap an ice cube or cold pack in a cloth and hold it to your wrists, neck, or the backs of your knees for a minute or two. These spots have lots of blood flow, so cooling them helps bring your whole body’s temperature down more efficiently.

  • Lie Low (Literally)
Heat rises — so sitting or lying on the floor, especially on tile or hardwood, can help you feel noticeably cooler within minutes.

  • Cool Foot Soak with Peppermint
Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to a bowl of cool water and soak your feet. It’s refreshing, grounding, and gives your whole system a subtle reset.

Massage is also great option for heat wave self-care. Massage improves circulation, reduces swelling, and promotes relaxation, all of which cool the body down.  The Gentle Place offers climate controlled massage rooms to keep you just the right coolness during your summer massages.
