We are excited to now offer a new service at The Gentle Place: Manual Lymphatic Drainage.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic massage technique designed to stimulate the flow of lymph—an essential fluid in the body’s immune and waste removal system. Developed in the 1930s by Dr. Emil Vodder, this technique is often used in both medical and wellness settings to reduce swelling, promote detoxification, and support immune health.
Unlike deep tissue massage, MLD uses very light pressure and long, sweeping strokes to encourage the natural movement of lymph through the lymphatic vessels. Since the lymphatic system doesn’t have its own pump like the heart does for blood, MLD serves as an external aid to keep things moving efficiently—especially in people who have blockages or slow circulation.
Who Can Benefit From Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
1. Post-Surgery Patients:
One of the most common applications of MLD is for people recovering from surgery, especially cosmetic procedures like liposuction, tummy tucks, or facelifts. After surgery, swelling and fluid retention are normal. MLD helps reduce post-op edema, encourages faster healing, and can even minimize scarring when used consistently.
2. Individuals With Lymphedema:
Lymphedema is a chronic condition where excess lymph fluid collects in tissues, often in the arms or legs, due to a compromised lymphatic system—commonly after lymph node removal or radiation therapy. MLD is a cornerstone treatment for managing this condition, as it helps move the fluid and reduces discomfort.
3. People With Chronic Illness or Fatigue:
Those dealing with autoimmune diseases, fibromyalgia, or chronic fatigue syndrome often report feeling a sense of relief after MLD sessions. The therapy can help reduce inflammation and provide a gentle way to stimulate the body’s detox process without adding physical stress.
4. Wellness Seekers & Detox Enthusiasts:
Even without a medical condition, people turn to MLD to support their general well-being. It can help with bloating, improve skin clarity, and give a light, refreshed feeling—making it popular in spa and beauty circles, especially before events or travel.
5. Athletes or Individuals With Poor Circulation:
MLD can also assist in speeding up recovery from intense workouts and improving circulation in individuals who are sedentary or experience fluid retention due to long periods of sitting or standing.
Currently, Manual Lymphatic Drainage is being offered at The Gentle Place by Courtney Romero, a certified MLD Therapist. Book an appointment with her HERE, or call us for more information at 508-788-7300
