Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle and effective therapeutic service that aids the body’s lymphatic system to flow properly.
The body’s lymphatic system is a crucial system that affects how we heal, how we feel, how we move, and how we look. Movement is required in order for our lymphatic fluid to flow and drain properly. When our lymphatic fluid cannot move freely around for whatever reason(s) and cannot be filtered by our built-in “drains,” we end up with stagnant fluid, especially around our joints. Autoimmune conditions, edema (swelling), bruising, scar tissue, pain, limited range of motion, and/or a dissatisfactory appearance are some examples of what can occur if the lymphatic system is hindered in some way or just in need of a tune up.
MLD is not a typical massage experience, though it is relaxing and hands-on. Clients can either wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing during the session, or they can be undressed to their comfort level. Clients will always be carefully and strategically draped by linens, as they would be during a massage. Since each client is unique, each session and ongoing plan of treatment will be tailored to the client’s goals and needs. MLD is done without the use of oil/cream as to specifically target the major lymph nodes, which are close to the surface of the skin.
Clients can expect a relaxing session that feels good. They will likely feel lymph fluid moving and releasing internally. After a session, clients will likely feel lighter and better than before the session, with decreased pain, swelling, increased range of motion, and improved physical appearance of skin. Clients frequently report continued relief and positive effect after a MLD session, including weight loss (up to a few pounds). MLD is especially helpful pre and post any surgical procedure to decrease the amount of time it takes to heal and recover.
