Relax with a massage at The Gentle Place

Lower Back Ache? Physicians now advocating for Massage, Yoga, etc.

Low back pain is second only to colds and flu for the most common reasons people head to their doctor’s office.

However, according to new guidelines from the American College of Physicians, massage therapy, as well as other natural therapies such as yoga and exercise, are now being recommended for low back pain. These guidelines analyzed more than 150 studies on low back pain treatments, and non-pharmacological approaches such as massage therapy are preferred.(1)

The type of acute pain we’re talking about is your “garden variety back pain you might get after shoveling a little too much or over-exercising,” says ACP president Dr. Nitin Damle — not the kind of pain that radiates down your leg and causes numbness, or the type which results from a major accident.(2)

At The Gentle Place, we always want to rule out serious issues, so we recommend seeing your doctor before you take a Yoga class or have a massage if you have had an injury or have severe or radiating pain. However, with muscular pains that are related to overuse, tension, spasms or inflammation, we have great results reducing pain and speeding up recovery with massage from our professional therapists.
